SkyCity Entertainment Group, the company that owns and operates five different land-based casinos in Australia and New Zealand, has announced the appointment of David Attenborough as a Non-Executive Director.

The appointment will become effective once it receives all necessary regulatory approvals, but it is expected to be completed by the end of February. Until then, David Attenborough will join the SkyCity Entertainment Board of Directors in an advisory capacity.

Speaking about the appointment of David Attenborough, Julian Cook, the Chairman of SkyCity Entertainment described his new colleague as an individual with “extensive gambling industry and corporate governance and sustainability experience” and added that Attenborough “will bring considerable expertise to the Skycity board.”

David Attenborough is based in Sydney and has previously worked as a Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director at Tabcorp, the powerful Australian lottery and betting operator. He left that company in 2022 after 12 years on the job, following the demerger of the firm’s lottery business from the wagering and media arm.

Before his time with Tabcorp, David Attenborough was Chief Executive Officer of Phumelela Gaming and Leisure for six years and also held gambling-focused roles at the Hilton Group.

Losses Reported In Previous Fiscal Year

David Attenborough’s appointment comes at a difficult time for SkyCity, the company is the subject of court federal proceedings launched by the Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre and has also recorded losses in the 2022 fiscal year.

SkyCity Entertainment Group has recorded a net loss of 21 million dollars in the 2022 fiscal year. The negative result was primarily due to a decrease in net revenues, but the company’s expenditure also registered a slight increase. However, it is worth mentioning that the company’s properties in Auckland, Hamilton, Queenstown and Adelaide remained closed for a very long time during the first half of the fiscal year.

The net revenue registered by SkyCity Entertainment during this period dropped 33 percent compared to the previous fiscal year, amounting to 397 million dollars from the 592 million dollars reported the year before.

The most important contributor to the company’s coffers was SkyCity Auckland, which brought in 52 percent of the total revenue. SkyCity Adelaide contributed 31 percent of the company’s revenue during the 2022 fiscal year, but overall its contribution dropped by 7 percent compared to the previous year.
