Betr, the Australian betting operator owned by NTD Pty Limited, has received a fine worth 210,000 Australian dollars from the New South Wales government for breaching the state’s wagering laws.
Betr launched in October 2022 in New South Wales, and in order to attract more customers it issued some promotional offers, including odds of 100-1 and 20-1 on major events such as the Melbourne Cup, Cox Plate, NRL and AFL. These promotional odds were advertised pretty much everywhere, online and on radio and television, even in newspapers.
The New South Wales Liquor & Gaming authority found that these advertisements breached the state laws. The laws of New South Wales prohibit the advertisement of any offer of an inducement to participate in a gambling activity.
That is why the state regulator issued 14 penalty infringement notices to Betr, which amounted to 210,000 Australian dollars. The betting operator elected to pay the fine right away, even though it is the highest ever fine issued to a wagering operator for such a breach in New South Wales.
