The iGaming market in Ontario, Canada’s most populous province and the only one that has a regulated online casino and sports betting market, has registered further growth in the second quarter of the 2023 fiscal year. Online gaming is prohibited in other Canadian provinces outside of the provincial lottery corporations, which have a monopoly.

Revenue from online gambling in Ontario more than doubled compared to the same quarter of last year, amounting to 540 million Canadian dollars. Player spending in the province also registered solid growth, 132 percent compared to the second quarter of 2022.

The second quarter of last year was quite significant as it was the second full quarter since the regulated market opened. Back then the total iGaming revenue for the province amounted to 267 million dollars.

This year’s total revenue was 105 percent higher, and most of it came from online casinos which operate in Ontario. These operators managed to generate revenue of 407 million dollars, while sports betting websites accounted for 118 million dollars. Online poker had a smaller slice of the pie with revenue of just 16 million dollars.

Total wagers in the second quarter amounted to 14.20 billion dollars, a figure which represents a significant increase from the 6.04 billion dollars that were spent in the same quarter of last year.

Internet casino games, including live dealer games, attracted wagers of 11.90 billion dollars, sports betting options generated 1.90 billion dollars in wagers, while online poker had just 387 million dollars.

More Active Operators

The data was published by iGaming Ontario, the government organization that is in charge of overseeing the online gaming market in the province. The local regulator also announced that the number of active operators in the province has increased quite substantially compared to the second quarter of last year, going up from 24 to 47 licensed operators.

These licensed operators offered players 71 different online gambling websites, quite a few more than the 42 that were active at the end of the second quarter of last year. Active player accounts also registered a healthy increase, from 628,000 to 943,000.

iGaming Ontario also announced that the average monthly spend per active player account amounted to 191 dollars, also higher than the 142 dollars worth of average spend which was recorded in the previous year.
