Holland Casino Faces €1.3M Loss in 2024 as Online Revenue Slumps

Holland Casino concluded 2024 facing a significant financial setback, reporting a net loss of €1.3 million—marking a stark contrast to the €31.9 million profit recorded the previous year. Total gross revenue for the year stood at €784 million, representing a 4.1% drop compared to 2023’s €817.7 million.

One of the most prominent impacts was seen in the online gaming segment, which saw revenues decline sharply by 26.6%, falling from €116 million to €85.2 million. This drop has been partly attributed to the implementation of stricter deposit limits in the Netherlands, which some believe may have inadvertently pushed players toward the unregulated gambling sector. According to the Dutch regulator KSA, this shadow market is now nearly equivalent in size to the licensed one.

Meanwhile, revenue from physical casino branches fared better, with only a modest 0.4% decrease to €698.8 million. Despite these challenges, guest attendance across venues increased to 5.2 million visitors, a rise that Holland Casino interprets as a testament to continued customer appreciation.

Challenges in Responsible Gambling Initiatives

The company also reported paying €222.6 million in gambling taxes in 2024 and has voiced strong concerns about a planned tax hike to 37.8% slated for 2026. Holland Casino warns that this additional burden would push its overall tax load to over 50% of turnover—an unsustainable level, it argues, that would significantly restrict its ability to fund responsible gambling and prevention programs.

CEO Petra de Ruiter emphasized the importance of continued investment in player safety: “Despite the result and the challenges ahead, 2024 was a good year and I am proud of the organisation. We remain fully committed to safe and responsible gaming and we have made very good progress in this area this year as well. I think it is important to emphasise that prevention is and remains human work. Safety and responsible gaming require sufficient investment space.”

Safer Gambling Measures Evolve

In its efforts to advance player protection, Holland Casino halted 24/7 gaming operations at its Rotterdam and Amsterdam-West locations and implemented a new risk-detection system for online gambling. Public information has been made more accessible by simplifying it to B1 language level, and the prevention advisory team has been bolstered.

Although the number of prevention-related conversations dipped slightly year-on-year—falling by 548 for land-based and by 193 for online channels—there was a notable increase of 491 in land-based measures and alerts. In contrast, online pop-up notifications and emails dropped significantly from 308,906 to 153,978. The casino also reported 10,736 anti-money laundering reports to the Financial Intelligence Unit, with the online segment accounting for just 590 of those—a sharp drop from the previous year’s 1,100.

Looking Ahead: Stability Amid Cost-Cutting

Despite the year’s financial adversity, De Ruiter expressed cautious optimism for 2025: “If we look ahead to 2025, we see that in the first quarter with the measures taken, turnover will remain more or less the same. With the – sometimes painful – cost-saving measures taken, we believe that the stretch is largely over.”

Holland Casino is also garnering recognition within the industry. Its Venlo branch was awarded the title of Best Casino in Europe, and the Utrecht location received accolades for its sustainability efforts. The company has also been able to reduce its pandemic-related tax debt from €194.8 million to €155.8 million, showcasing gradual financial recovery.

Even as tax pressures mount and regulatory changes reshape the online gambling environment, Holland Casino continues to invest in safeguarding its players and modernizing its operations. The path ahead may be challenging, but the operator’s commitment to responsibility and innovation remains firm.

The company’s online casino has a vast offering of live dealer games, ranging from classic live blackjack and live roulette tables to more innovative and fresh game shows. The online casino has deals in place with some of the world’s best live casino suppliers, including Playtech, Pragmatic Play, and Skywind.
